Sermons on Hebrews

Themes in Hebrews: A Call to Persevere

We come to the conclusion of our series in the book of Hebrews as Peter Wells looks at the final theme: a call to persevere. We see in chapter 10 that the writer implores his readers to persevere in faith in many different ways through the phrase “let us”. An encouragement for us to run with perseverance the race marked out before us (sound familiar?) despite whatever potential traps the enemy lays in our way.

James leads the rest of the service as we begin to launch our testimony programme in readiness for our 175th anniversary celebrations next year. Pete leads our sung worship.

Themes in Hebrews: Entering God’s Rest

This week we carry on with our series in Hebrews with Chris focussing on us resting in God’s presence. We see how this develops from God resting on the seventh day of creation through the years of Jubilee given to the Israelites to us today being invited – through Jesus – into God’s eternal presence. All we need to do is believe and not fall away.

Andy leads the rest of the service while Lynne and Dave lead our sung worship.

Themes in Hebrews: Maturity

Chris continues with our series looking at the themes throughout the book of Hebrews by this time highlighting maturity. We are told throughout scripture to have a strong foundation to our faith. This is undoubtedly important! But if we stay at that level and do not mature we are not living up to our true potential in God. Chris looks at how we can become more mature as Christians.

Susan leads the rest of the service whilst Pete and Nick lead our sung worship.

Themes in Hebrews: Faith

Chris continues with our series in Hebrews, this time looking at what the writer has to say on the topic of faith. How is our faith defined? Do we think that by having more faith will make God notice us more? No! The quantity of faith doesn’t matter, it’s what it prompts us to do that counts.

James leads the rest of the service as (another) James from YFC helps us to launch our new Monday night series “Battle Plan” around praying for children and young people. Mike leads our sung worship.

Themes in Hebrews: New Covenant

Today we continued our series looking at the themes that run through the book of Hebrews with Chris speaking on the concept of a new covenant with God. Thanks to Jesus’ ultimate sacrifice the Old Testament covenant of animal sacrifices and offerings is fulfilled and a new covenant has taken its place. We are free from the burden of sin and have uninterrupted access to the Father through the Spirit. Wow!

Susan leads the rest of the service as we reflect back on our away day that was held yesterday and what God is saying to us as a fellowship. Pete and Nick lead our sung worship.

Themes in Hebrews: Jesus is Better

This week we begin a new series looking at the themes that run through the book of Hebrews. Chris starts off by focussing on the first four verses of the book where the author is beginning to explain who Jesus is. Through these few short verses we see that Jesus is better than anything we could possibly imagine!

Andy leads the rest of the service as we respond to our previous series on prayer, whilst Pete and Nick lead our sung worship.

Year Text in Context 2025

After the brief interlude last Sunday where we met at St Mary’s Chris resumes his look at our year text for 2025. This time we look at the verse in its original context in the book of Hebrews, where the writer is linking all that Jesus achieved to the Jewish scriptures of the Old Testament. Chris highlights in particular the first half of verse 1 (the second half of which contains our year text) and verses 14 to 16 as things that can help us to achieve that perserverence in the race marked out before us.

Andy leads the rest of the service as Pete brings a powerful update on our mission of the month, CSW, and we join together as a community to share Communion. Pete and Nick lead our sung worship.

Vision Service 2025

Happy New Year! This week we held our vision service for 2025, a chance to look back at the events that happened in our Church family over the last year and look ahead to what God wants to do through us in the coming months. Chris also reveals our year text for 2025, taken from Hebrews 12 verse 1.

Ant leads the rest of the service as we start the year in prayer, Pete and Nick lead our sung worship this week.

Together We Grow

Happy New Year! As we begin a new year, we conclude our latest All Age series on Frontline Sundays, this month looking at how Together We Grow. God did not intend for Christians to walk the journey alone, we are called to be members of a community: the church. Chris explores how being part of the church helps us hold on to hope, spur one another on and encourages us to keep meeting.
Shona leads the rest of the service whilst Pete leads our sung worship.
