Easter Trail – Monday 30th March – The Prodigal Son – Luke 15:2-20

Jesus told this parable or story to explain God’s love, generosity and forgiveness.

He began saying, ‘a man had two sons and they both worked together on their father’s land. Someday, the two sons would inherit their father’s money and land.

One day, the youngest son said, ‘father, give me the money I will inherit when you die. I want to see the world and have a good time now’. The dad was very sad at this request, but agreed and gave his son his share of his inheritance.

The son took the money, left home and began his big adventure.

He made lots of friends and went to lots of parties.

But the money ran out and he could not afford to pay his rent.

He was far away from home. His friends abandoned him and he had to get a job. The WORST job ever, feeding and looking after pigs!

He was very sad and ashamed that he had spent all his father’s money on wrong things. He decided he would go back home and tell his dad he was really sorry and instead of being his son, he would ask for a job.

His dad missed him very much and looked up the road for him every day. Then, when he saw him walking home, he ran to him, hugged and rejoiced. The son was crying and said to his dad, ‘I am sorry for taking your money. Please will you give me a job?’ But the dad said, ‘you are my son and I love you. Come home, lets have a party’.

Jesus told this parable or story to show us that God is always merciful and will forgive us when we say sorry. God is always looking for us when we are away from Him and He wants us to be part of His family.
